Pint of Science: Zombie Survival Science

With media telling us that bacteria are increasing in their resistance to antibiotics, are we getting closer to a zombie like epidemic? How do we know if a bacteria is a new resistant strain? And what can we do to protect ourselves against them? This evening we find out about how to identify new bacteria and what they do and then how to medicate against them through the creation of new drugs.

The Ducks Nuts Vodka Bar is an 18+ venue and patrons require 18+ identification to enter. A cash bar and finger food will be available.

Antibiotics and Bacterial Resistance

Dr Tegan Harris (Senior Research Officer, Menzies School of Health Research)

Antibiotics are lauded as the panacea for bacterial infections. But the emergence of ‘superbugs’ have the potential to render currently available antibiotics ineffective through transmission of their resistance mechanisms.

Medicinal Chemistry – Finding the Cure

Dr Martin Boland (Senior Lecturer – Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Charles Darwin University)

What does it take to go from, “Hey, let’s find a cure!” to “We would like to announce a new cure…”? Medicinal chemistry is the science of going from a desire to treat an illness to the business of producing a marketable drug.
