Update 13th June: After a public uproar yesterday at the snap decision to shift the event from it’s long term home the Territory Day Celebrations will in fact return to Mindil Beach this July 1!

Yesterday we shared that after more than 20 years, Mindil Beach’s iconic Territory Day fireworks were on the move – relocated from Mindil to Darwin’s Waterfront because of issues over the granting of an authority certificate.

A complaint had been lodged in regards to Mindil Beach’s status as a sacred site, which led to the potential need, for the first time ever, to apply for an authority certificate to access the site.

Whilst the certificate is not mandatory, it does provide guidelines, which if followed, means developers can’t be prosecuted under the Sacred Sites Act. It is essentially a risk management tool.

Events such as the Dry Season Mindil Beach Markets and Bass in the Grass operate within the guidelines of an authority certificate, but the fireworks have never previously applied for one.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said Major Events essentially ran out of time to secure the authority certificate that would have allowed them to keep fireworks at Mindil Beach this year.

She had said “The length of time they would need to get that authority meant they would be pushing to get it by Territory Day so (Major Events) made a decision to have Territory Day at the Waterfront.”

“I think there’s been a communications breakdown around a few things that have happened so the decision was made by Major Events to hold the event elsewhere this year”.

Regardless of where the celebrations are held – we are pretty sure it will still go off with a bang!
