PARRTJIMA — Lighting Up the Red Centre

Every April, as the desert nights cool and the stars sharpen over Central Australia, Alice Springs transforms into something extraordinary.

Parrtjima — meaning “lighting up” in the Arrernte language — is a free, 10-night festival that turns the ancient MacDonnell Ranges into a living canvas of light, colour and story. Towering cliffs glow with large-scale projections, telling stories that stretch back tens of thousands of years, shared by Aboriginal artists from across Central Australia.

As you walk through the festival, the desert comes alive.
Light spills across rock faces. Music drifts through the cool night air. Families spread blankets, kids chase glowing installations, and visitors pause — often silently — taking in stories that belong to this land.

Parrtjima is more than a light show.
It’s a meeting place — where old stories meet new technology, where culture is shared openly, and where the Red Centre reveals its depth, beauty and resilience. Alongside the breathtaking projections, the festival features live music, talks, workshops, and opportunities to hear directly from the artists and custodians whose stories illuminate the ranges.
