Arafura Closing Party

Written by on 03/05/2019

Following the successful Opening Celebration and after eight days of quality competition, Arafura Games 2019 organisers are preparing again for large crowds to converge at Darwin Waterfront on Saturday night for the Closing Celebration.

Participating nations, athletes, coaches and visitors will join locals for the Closing Celebration tribute to the Arafura Sea and its people as part of a breathtaking goodbye to the Arafura Games 2019.

Event organisers are reminding spectators, local businesses and residents to observe the changes in traffic management, plan ahead for the night and consider using free public buses into Darwin city.

Director of the Arafura Games, Sally Jarvis, said “After an eight-year hiatus, the Arafura Games 2019 has made a spectacular return to Darwin and Saturday night we are expecting thousands to turn out to finish the event off in style.”

“The Arafura Closing Celebration will feature schools, local dance companies and some of the Northern Territory’s finest musicians in what promises to be a memorable finish to the Games.

“We are again reminding the community to take care, be patient when experiencing different conditions and consider parking in the CBD and walking down to the Waterfront, or better still catch a free bus.”

Event organisers have worked with key stakeholders including the Darwin Waterfront, City of Darwin, NT Police and Government agencies to develop a safe approach to the event.

Key points to observe:

  • Spectators are encouraged to arrive from 5pm for a 6.30pm start.
  • Bags will be checked on entrance. Please carry no glass, alcohol or prohibited items.
  • Great food options are available at the Darwin Waterfront. Come early and secure your spot within the spectator seating areas and enjoy a bite to eat.
  • Reserved seating in front of the stage is for athletes and team officials. There are a number of spectator vantage points to view the celebrations.  Bring down a picnic rug or camp chair and sit back and enjoy the show.
  • Transport on public buses into the city will be free for anyone attending the Closing Celebration. Buses will arrive and leave from Darwin Bus Interchange on Harry Chan Ave.
  • An exclusion zone will be placed around the Darwin Convention Centre, extending out to the sea wall, to make way for the fireworks display.
  • The Darwin Convention Centre underground carpark is expected to full early in the day for the final day of competition and remain so into the evening.
  • 200 new car parking spaces have been made available in Mavie Street, off Stokes Hill Road.
  • Mavie Street has been opened to create a loop road in and out of the Waterfront Precinct to ease traffic congestion.
  • Kitchener Drive will only be open to the hotel and the multi-story carpark.  Residence access will be via Hughes Ave.
  • Traffic controllers will be in place on all roads in the precinct to help direct the public.
  • Changed traffic conditions will be in place from 4pm.
  • People wishing to drive are encouraged to park in the CBD and walk to the Waterfront
  • Safe walking routes have been established.

Please remember, this is a free public event which is likely to attract a large audience. Please follow directions regarding the changed conditions, be patient and be respectful so that we can all enjoy a great finish to the Arafura Games 2019.
