MATILDA’S MADNESS
Written by TFM on 16/08/2023
Here’s the things you need to know ahead of tonight’s game.
The Matilda’s will be playing at Stadium Australia tonight in Sydney, the game kicks off at 7:30pm NT Time and just in case you’ve been living under a rock – they are up against the English Team who are nicknamed the Lionesses.
While it’s a great excuse to head to the pub, you might find getting a seat a bit tricky so don’t panic, you can also watch the game on Channel Seven and Optus Sport as well as on the ABC
There are of course other options with Stadium Screening happening all over the country for free. Darwin will be screening the Game at the Darwin Waterfront and Festival Park and in Alice Springs at the Ross Park Soccer Oval.
Here’s a bit of background on how the Matilda’s have been doing so far:

The Matilda’s have won four matches and lost one so far.
Australia vs Ireland: Matildas won 1-0
Australia vs Nigeria: Matildas lost 2-3
Australia vs Canada: Matildas won 4-0
Australia vs Denmark: Matildas won 2-0
Australia vs France: Matildas won 7-6 (on penalties)
Australia finished at the top of their group.
And here’s how the English Team have been doing:
England also came out top in their group, having not lost a game in the tournament to date.
England vs Haiti: England won 1-0
England vs Denmark: England won 1-0
England vs China: England won 6-1
England vs Nigeria: England won 4-2 (on penalties)
England vs Colombia: England won 2-1
While England are amongst the favourites to win (they took out the European Women’s Championship in 2022) when the teams last faced each other at a friendly match in April this year in London, the Matilda’s came out on top 2-0
Tonight the Matilda’s will have the home-side advantage and a ton of local support in the stands (no pressure!)
If the Matilda’s win tonight then they’ll be through to the finals to battle it out for the World Cup, held at Stadium Australia Sydney on Sunday August 20.
If they lose, they’ll still have one more game to play in Brisbane on Saturday August 19th to decide who will take out third place.
