THE popular Parap markets on Saturday have been cancelled for the next two weeks due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Kylie McCourt from the Parap Village Market and Traders Association announced the closure on 1041 Territory FM this morning.

“It’s heartbreak for us all — we will be postponed for the next two weeks and monitor the situation,” she said.

“We did a number of risk assessments and found the risk very high with the way this situations moving, we’ve got more cases and flights tracking here.

“We just feel that we’re a community operation, we love our community and we don’t want to put our community, staff or our stall holders at risk in any way.”

The Freds Pass Rural Markets have also been cancelled until further notice.

At this stage it is still unclear whether other markets like Nightcliff and Rapid Creek will not go ahead as planned.

On Wednesday, Mr Gunner said markets could still go ahead in the Territory as long as common spaces were managed properly and complied with social distancing.

“So markets that are mainly food markets, takeaway and delivery is absolutely no problem, so the markets can go ahead on that basis,” he said.

“It’s about commonsense and the markets managing those common spaces.”
