The 2023 Community Radio Awards were announced at a gala dinner last weekend, held at the Adelaide Oval to wrap up the annual three day Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Conference..

Charles Darwin University’s own local radio station 104.1 Territory FM was nominated in two categories – Excellence in Music Presenting and Best Radio Program – Music, winning both.

The coveted award for Best Radio Program – Music was Territory FM’s Fresh MINT, hosted and programmed by Station Manager and Drive Presenter Matt Bern.

In a night that celebrated the diversity and creativity of community radio, Fresh MINT’s victory was a testament to the vibrant music scene in Darwin and the Northern Territory.

“Darwin may be the most isolated music scene, but it’s not to be overlooked. We’ve been providing a 2 hour weekly local music show to all NT community radio stations for nearly 10 years. The show is well established and extremely well connected,” said Mr Bern.

“We’re here to showcase the incredible musical talent our region has to offer, and this award is a tribute to all the amazing artists we’ve featured on the show.”

Every Thursday night, Fresh MINT keeps its loyal audience up to date with the latest musical gems emerging from the Northern Territory.

With the support of sponsors like APRA AMCOS, the show has become a platform for local talent to shine and an essential part of the community’s cultural tapestry.

Territory FM had yet another reason to celebrate as Mr Bern secured the Excellence in Music Presenting award for the daily program Drive with Matt Bern.

Mr Bern has been a fixture on the Darwin airwaves for 13 years, guiding listeners through their evening commutes with classic hits and his unmistakable personality.

The Excellence in Music Presenting award recognizes his unwavering commitment to delivering top-notch entertainment and musical experiences to his audience.

“I’m beyond honoured to receive this award, the whole team produces amazing radio for Darwin at our Casuarina studio’s, so happy to be a part of it.” he said.

“I look forward to more years of sharing the joy of music and local stories with our community. Territory FM has a bright future with 3 entirely new studio’s being built at CDU’s new campus in Darwin City. Can’t wait to claim one of those new studio’s.”

2023 has been a significant year for community broadcasters, with the release of Roadmap 2033 paving a ten-year vision for the sector.

There was a record 350+ entries from a diverse range of stations across the country and the Awards provide a chance for the sector to come together and celebrate all the hard work and success of stations and the exceptional individuals who keep them on air.
