Making some waves with the soft, smooth sounds of the 70's and 80's. Darwin's coolest playlist on a Sunday morning!
Yacht Rock, originally known as the West Coast sound is a broad music style. Relaxed, laid back, easy going soft rock, one of the most commercially successful genres to come out of the mid 1970s to 1980s.
Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, and disco, common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies, and of course let’s not forget the album art or the actual lyrics referring to boating or sailing.
Its name, coined in 2005 came from the internet parody phenomenon “Yacht Rock”, 12 short but very memorable episodes with JD Ryznar and a crew of hipsters with fake moustaches, impeccable record collections and a love of really smooth music – long may it sail!
While it’s great to listen to on a sloop in the harbour as the sun sets (or rises), it’s equally as good on your balcony at home or wherever you happen to be kicking back on the weekend.
